5 mile derogation rule

Is the 5 mile derogation rule still applicable? Will keepers moving ewes with new lambs from the birth holding to another holding under 5 miles away, still in their keepership, need to tag these lambs first? This is an important issue to a lot of farmers who have started lambing and are finding it very difficult to order tags at the moment. Most farmers would prefer to tag lambs when they are older and stronger.

Official Response

There are no changes to the rules for moving sheep and goats, where there is no change of ownership to temporary grazings and short lets within 5 miles of the main CPH.

For moves out with 5 miles, an entry should be recorded in the holding register and a movement document should be completed, showing the number of animals moved at batch level. However, all animals are required to be tagged before they leave the holding of birth.

For further information on the 5 mile rule or within business moves you should contact your local RPID office.

Regarding your question on

Regarding your question on the "5 mile rule" and moving new born lambs within a keeper's holdings, we have contacted Scot Gov and should have a definitive answer shortly.

Problems ordering tags are likely because some manufacturers have yet to gain approval for their EID tags. Only tags on the RPA approved list can be issued for official electronic ID purposes. This list is updated as soon as new tags are approved so be sure to check for the most up to date information.

I think the government line may stay the same, tagged when leaving the holding of birth, but with the 5-mile derogation. It is certainly the line they took this year,
Also, just to let you know, it is taking ages to get tags from Ritchey, manufacturing them is pretty slow.... so ORDER IN PLENTY OF TIME!!!!

Nothing to do with the 5 mile Rule!

With regard to farmers finding it "very difficult to order tags"....
Can I point out that Keepers can only get official sheep tags from
manufacturers and types approved on the RPA List here:
If you require tags quickly it is futile to order them from manufacturers
not on this list. Please check the list regularly as it does change.

The answer to your question is quite clear in the guidelines. For moves within a
business ( same ownership) extensively kept sheep need to be tagged within
9 months of date of birth. Distance is no object !!

Therefore the answer is NO THEY DO NOT NEED TAGGED unless they are over
9 months old - which is unlikely!

The 5 mile rule is of no relavence to the question.

tagging before moving

Mr Sheep tagger,
you do usually have to tag lambs when moving from the holding of birth even when kept in the sme ownership, but there is a derogation not to tag when within 5 miles.
If you need a movement document, you need to tag.
This is taken from the guidance. I am pretty sure that the derogation for moving between holdings within business and within 5 miles will still be ok un-tagged

That was my Department sheep inspector hat on!!!!!!!!

Section 1: Identification - sheep

When to identify

Lambs born on your holding must be identified:

* within six months of birth if the animals are housed overnight;
* within nine months of birth if the animals are not housed overnight (kept in extensive conditions); or
* before the animal moves from its holding of birth, if earlier.
