Update by the Administrator Research Pilot Phase 1 Report
EID is almost upon us and yet there seems to be no results from the pilot to let us know the expected efficiency of equipment etc once large numbers start going through the system. Are any figures available?
=========================================
can we use the tags still
We have a few EID tags left over from last year. Can we use them or do we now have to use tags which show up on the reader with the same number as is on the outside of the tag?

The New Scottish Guidance
The New Scottish Guidance notes say this applies to sheep born of identified after 31st December 2009.
Therefore if the lambs are still under 9 months old and have never been tagged I read this to mean they should
have the appropriate new style tag.
Wrong Guess by me
The current Scottish Guidelines (which werent released when I last answered) now say sheep born or first identified after 31/12/2009.
So if you have lambs (hoggets !!!) born last year - that were of course born less than
9 months ago it would appear that you should be using the new tagging regime.
Last years tags
This will be covered by the Guidelines which are imminent!
All the new legislation relates to sheep born after 31/12/2009.
and also says born or first identified
Up To Date details of EID project
When will the user's be told which systems are to be approved ?
Has the Ritchie tag been tested ( with the tru-test monitor)

The pilot is not involved in
The pilot is not involved in the approval of equipment for use. That job currently lies with International Committee for Animal Recording.
However if something is sold as being ISO 11784/11785 compatible then it should function correctly with Ritchey or any other manufacturers sheep EID tags.
I am unaware of the 'tru-test monitor' and, to the best of my knowledge, it has not been used in the pilot.
Here is the Official Response to Phase 1

If you have any questions then we will always try out best to answer them.
It should now be fairly evident from the Marts and Abattoirs as to which equipment works
and which does not - especially if you are a partner farm!
If you ask the right question the it may well solicit a valid response on this forum !
Just beware anyone claiming 100% read rates.
Phase 1 report just released
The findings of phase 1 of the pilot have only just been published and can be found on the linked page on the Scottish Government website.
